Oak Tree Pruning Time Is in Fall and Winter!
The Reason For Pruning Oak Trees In The Fall And Winter
It is important to know that oak trees cannot be trimmed or pruned in the summer. Summer tree trimming can lead to many opportunities for insects and diseases to damage or kill the tree. Oak wilt, the fatal fungal disease that continues to spread across the Midwest, has no cure. With fresh pruning, the cuts attract the beetles that carry oak wilt fungus, therefore, it is very important to not prune while the beetles are active, which is normally April through October. Remember, if it is necessary to cut the oak in summer, the wounds should be sprayed with a special paint to seal the cuts. Again, it is important to never prune when insects and tree pathogens are present and also, always sterilize your pruning tool blades to avoid the risk of spreading disease between trees.
